Action in one of the Payson Women's Golf Association's most prestigious tournaments teed off July 8 at Payson Golf Course.
The fray is the month-long Arizona State Medallion tournament.
"It is a state-sponsored, low gross and low net tournament with the winners attending the state tournament held in December," PWGA member Joyce Goff said.
Out to defend the titles they won last summer are Shari Cody and Sharon Peterson.
During the 2007 tournament, Peterson finished with a low gross card of 156 which represented her two best scores of 77 and 79.
Cody tallied a 135, which was her gross score less handicap.
In 2006, longtime PMGA member Laura Meyocks, who has won about every title the association serves up, won her first President's Cup title with a 135.
On July 8 in a fewest putts tournament at PGC Meyocks tuned up for a run at a second President's Cup victory.
With just 27 putts, Meyocks was first in the A flight. Other flight winners were Mary Cain, B, 31; Mary Jones, C, 30; and Marilyn Schaal, D, 36.
Isabella Sockrider and Claudia Bullard were second in their flights.
Closest-to-the-pin winners were Jan Burns, No. 8, 9 feet, 1 inch; Cody, No.5, 27 feet; Schaal, No. 14, 8 feet, 9 inches; and Sockrider, No. 17, 22 feet, 7 inches.
In addition to fewest putts and cup play highlighting the PWGA summer scene, members will tee off July 15 in their annual three-week-long eclectic tournament.
"The individual who improves their score hole-by-hole during the three weeks will win their flight," Goff said.
PWGA members began the month with a Bingo, Bango, Bongo shoot out.
Goff explained the format as, "one point is earned for first on the green, closest to the pin and first in the hole for a total of three points per hole."
