Trash Left In National Forest Greater Than Previous Year

This year the trash left by our visitors (campers) to our area is much worse than last year.

There have been trash bags left by the side of the road and at the campsites around our area. There was a bag of garbage left by the side of the road on the Control Road and it was scattered all over by critters looking for something to eat.

The next time I looked, the trash had been picked up by a good Samaritan.

I wish to thank that person for doing that good deed. I wish that these people who trash a campsite would have a bit more consideration for their forest and for the people who live in the area. We welcome our visitors, but we expect them to leave the campsites as clean as when they arrive.

Campers, read the signs put up by the Forest Service. "Pack it in, pack it out."

Summer is flying by

The summer is going by much too fast. This column is the last one for July 2008. It has been so busy this summer that my husband and I have not had much of a chance to go fishing. Fishing is a relaxing time for us, a time to gather our thoughts and wait for that next bite. We really miss the days of sitting on the creek listening to the birds and the breeze whistling through the trees. We are hoping to make time for our favorite pastime in the near future.

Meetings for month of August

Since the month of August is just around the corner, I will list the meetings for the month so no one will be surprised and miss some important meetings. Most of them are in the first week of August.

Hellsgate Fire Department

The Fireflies Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 4 at station #22 in Tonto Village. The agenda will include the annual Labor Day barbecue. This year, the date for the barbecue is Aug. 30. The auxiliary needs a few helping hands.

If you are interested in helping out a great cause for our firefighters, contact president pro-tem Nancy Yoakum at (928) 478-4370.

The Tonto Village Domestic Water Improvement District will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the fire station in Tonto Village.

It is important that the residents of the village attend these meetings. Water is vital and should be a main concern to everyone in the village.

The next meeting of the Hellsgate Fire Board will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20 at station #22 in Tonto Village. The agenda is not known yet, but I will keep you posted in future columns.

Double D doings

The next scotch doubles tournament will be held at 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 25 at the Double D. The tournament will include a potluck supper. Bring a dish to share and enjoy the friendly competition.

The winners of the nine-ball tournament last week showed that the gals from Christopher Creek dominated the pool tables. Nancy Olson and Patti Boschling shot for first and second place. Payge Ferriera from Mesa del managed to shoot third place. Chalk up those pool sticks and join in the fun on Tuesday evenings.

Sunday afternoon the players for the eight-ball tournament took to the tables and when the chalk dust settled, Joe Ferriera shot for first place followed by Harvey Poyner and Bruce Johnson.

Charles Wilcox, former pastor of the Tonto Village Chapel will start off the month of August with a birthday on Aug. 2. Jerry King of Tonto Village III has his big day on Aug. 7, followed by Mary Kindler of Bear Flat on Aug. 8.

Pleasant thoughts are sent your way with a heartfelt wish for a happy day for each of you.
