On Aug. 5, neighborhoods throughout Payson are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the "25th Annual National Night Out" (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.
National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Payson Police Department, will involve more than 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.
From 7 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 5, Payson residents, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.
Many neighborhoods throughout Payson will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, visits from police, flashlight walks and anticrime rallies.
The Payson Police Department will kick off this big event by hosting a free family western-themed day of fun, live music, youth games, entertainment, prize-winning contests and most importantly crime and drug prevention information.
This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2 at Green Valley Park.
Local nonprofit organizations will be on hand selling food, snacks and drinks. Local businesses, clubs, churches and organizations can get involved and join in the Payson Police Department's effort of crime and drug prevention.
Highlights include: "Giving Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party" poster contest (sponsored by the Rim Country Optimist Club), diaper derby contest, tricycle relay race -- police officers vs. firefighters, child fingerprinting, dunk tank, children's bounce houses, a chili cook-off and a pie eating contest.
