Intoxicated Boaters Targeted At Roosevelt

Gila County Sheriff's Office, in cooperation with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Forest Service, will be conducting an Operating Under the Influence (OUI) checkpoint at Roosevelt Lake in an effort to apprehend boat operators who are impaired by drugs and/or alcohol. The checkpoint will be in place during the weekend of June 28-29, 2008.

Past Arizona OUI checkpoint data indicate that in excess of 50 percent of boat operators are involved with the consumption of alcohol while operating watercraft. Statistics also show that approximately 10 percent of boating accidents involve the consumption of alcohol. State law prohibits the operation of a motorized watercraft with a blood alcohol level of .08. Recent boating accidents and associated fatalities in Arizona underscore the need for enhanced enforcement of this law.

This checkpoint will be operated under guidelines dictated by Arizona state law, Arizona Game and Fish Commission rules, and U.S. and Arizona Supreme Court case law.
