Donald Raymond Harris Sr. died March 3, 2008 in Payson, Ariz., his home for the last three years. He was born in Omaha, Neb. on Dec. 14, 1938 and was the oldest son of Don and Opal Harris.
He showed his business abilities early; and by age 14 was raising cattle to help his parents provide for their family of seven. After his family moved to Phoenix, Mr. Harris worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Company and retired after 26 years. Even then, he continued his entrepreneurial abilities by crafting beautiful homes in the greater Phoenix area for 42 years.
Whether he was hunting or enjoying a weekend at Lake Powell, he lived his life quietly and privately. Nobody loved America (or being a Republican) more than Mr. Harris. He instilled a strong work ethic in his three children, Donald R. Harris Jr., retired 1st Sgt. with the U.S. Army, and daughters Rebecca Harris and Jennifer Sofka. His children have been successful because of the example Mr. Harris provided them.
His mother, Opal C. Harris, preceded him in death. His father, Donald E. Harris, his three children and his siblings, brother Roger Harris and sisters Sue Marshall, Charlotte Brown and Bonnie Valero survive him. His six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his beloved dog Hazel also survive Mr. Harris.
The funeral service will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 8 at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 W. Thunderbird Road, Peoria, AZ 85381.
