St. Patrick's Day Dinner is Friday

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church will have its 13th annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 14 at the church, 507 W. Wade Lane.

The dinner will include corned beef, cabbage, glazed carrots, parsley potatoes, Jell-O salad, rolls, dessert and beverages.

Price for adults is $8, children under 10 are $4. Tickets will be available at the door. Takeout is available. For more information, call (928) 474-5440.

O'Dell is guest at ‘Eggs & Issues' March 12

On Wednesday, March 12, the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and Payson Regional Medical Center will present "Eggs & Issues" featuring Gila County Superintendent of Schools Linda O'Dell.

The meeting will begin at 7 a.m. at Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road. Payson Regional Medical Center will sponsor light refreshments for the morning. Please call the chamber to reserve a seat, (928) 474-4515.

Blood drives set

Arizona patients required more than 300,000 blood components last year. Most of us will need a transfusion during our lifetime. Donate blood at one of the following drives:

  • Payson Regional Medical Center, 807 S. Ponderosa, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, March 13 in the Bloodmobile in the parking lot.
  • RTA Hospice, 511 S. Mud Springs Road, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 18 in the conference room.
  • Wal-Mart, 300 N. Beeline Highway, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, March 21 in the Bloodmobile in the parking lot.
  • Payson Elks Lodge, 1206 N. Beeline Highway, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 22 in the meeting room.
  • Payson High School, 301 S. McLane Road, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 25 in the lobby of the auditorium.

The Mogollon Health Alliance, in conjunction with the Payson Fire Department, will be holding a free family and friends CPR class on Wednesday, March 26. Please call Mogollon Health Alliance at (928) 472-2588 for more information and to register.

Girl Scout cookies

The Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council Annual Cookie Sale Program has arrived.

Girl Scouts have started the delivery of the popular treats and will have cookie booths set up at local stores until March 16 for direct purchase.

Group hike March 15

The Payson Area Trails System will lead a group hike of Cypress Trail starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 15.

Participants must register by March 14 and there is a $5 fee. It is open to all ages.

Meet at the established USFS Trail Access, approximately 2.0 miles east on Granite Dells Road from the Highway 260 intersection. Look for the "TRAIL" sign on the right (west) side of the road.

This hike is 4 miles round-trip and is fairly easy, but expect some inclines, loose rocks and seasonal running water. Don't forget your hiking boots and water.

ACC Town Hall on propane costs

The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) will hold a Town Hall meeting at Payson High School at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 18. The commissioners will discuss issues related to SemStream propane gas charges.

Candidate visits

Howard Shanker of Flagstaff is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Congressional District One. He will be in Payson Wednesday, March 19 at Fireside Espresso from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and at the Northern Gila County Democratic Club meeting at the Payson Public Library at 6:30 p.m.

See ‘World's Smallest Basketball Team'

The "Tiny Trotters" -- World's Smallest Basketball Team will present two hours of fun, laughter and entertainment at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 18 at the Tonto Apache Gym. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for youth and free for those 3 and younger. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Homework help available

Payson Institute of Learning is expanding its classrooms to include help for students with after-school homework on a one-to-one basis. They also have an art teacher for students who want to work with paints or clay. Classes are from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. There are five students to a class. Call (928) 472-3393 for more information.

Snow-day makeup dates

Payson Schools will hold classes on April 4 and 7, previously designated as Spring Recess, to make up for the snow days taken on Feb. 4 and 15.

The district must make up the days in order to fulfill state mandates. Student attendance is required.

Spring Eggstravaganza March 22 at Rumsey

The 14th annual egg scramble for children ages 12 and under is Saturday, March 22 at North Rumsey Park.

Scrambles (also known as egg hunts) for different age groups will be held at the following times: 9:30 a.m. ages 0-3, 9:45 a.m. ages 4 and 5, 10 a.m. ages 6 and 7, 10:15 a.m. ages 8 and 9, 10:30 a.m. ages 10 to 12, 10:45 a.m. special needs.

Children can collect eggs filled with candy and coupons for special prizes. Payson Humane Society is bringing a giant bunny and a llama. Children can have their picture taken with either for a donation.

Join, support local Walk For a Cure team

The Payson Pink Lady Bugs will host a Brat/Dog and Bake Sale starting at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 5 at Wal-Mart. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Walk For a Cure. The Payson Pink Lady Bugs are participating in the 3-day, 60-mile walk for the second year.

Each walker must raise $2,200 to participate. Last year the Payson Pink Lady Bugs raised more than $21,000.

Breast Cancer awareness items will be for sale along with a raffle. Raffle tickets will be $1 each or six for $5. The raffle will be for an afghan blanket donated and made by Ann Nap. The drawing for the winner will be at the Moose Lodge in Star Valley on June 28.

The Payson Pink Lady Bugs will be hosting a fund-raising dinner that day. Stop by the sale and enjoy all the homemade baked goods, brats and dogs.
