Women's Golf About To Tee Off For The Season

The Rim Country women's' golf campaign is about to tee off.

Both the nine- and 18-hole groups have scheduled preseason organizational luncheons, which will mark the onset of spring, summer and fall play.

The Lady Niners luncheon and meeting is set for 11:30 a.m., March 27 at the Crosswinds restaurant.

"Current members and new members are welcome at the luncheon," Lady Niner Ann Adams said.

The PWGA 18-hole group has scheduled its kick off brunch for 9 a.m., March 25 at the Mazatzal Casino.

"All ladies interested in golfing are welcome," long time PWGA member Joyce Goff said.

Goff is asking that those planning on attending make a reservation by calling her at (928) 474-4638.

The regular season for the 18-hole group will begin April 1 at Payson Golf Course. Follow up tournaments will be held each Tuesday of the month.

The Lady Niners, tee it up for the first time this season April 3 at PGC.

Once the season begins, the Lady Niners play each Thursday morning until next October.

At the end of each month, the members meet for an awards banquet during which the outstanding players are cited.

But it's not just the most accomplished players who take pleasure in the nine-hole sport.

"Don't let that nasty slice prevent you from coming out to the links to enjoy the great outdoors and camaraderie," Adams said.

"The Niners are a great group of women of all ages and skill levels."

Those wishing to attend the luncheon should make reservations by calling Adams at (928) 468-6686 or (602) 540-7526. Reservations can also be made by calling Anita at (928) 474-3444 or (623) 978-3432.

Those who wish to participate with the Lady Niners this season, but cannot attend preseason luncheon, should call Adams or Anita for information on how to join.

A big thanks

Bruce and Susie Haught and their Jack in the Box franchise deserve a huge thank you for stepping up to co-sponsor the upcoming Gracie Haught Classic softball tournament.

For more than two decades Bruce has given back to the community as a Payson Elementary School teacher and high school football and baseball coach.

Once again, Bruce and Susie are doing more than their share to support our town's youth.

Also deserving of our thanks is the Mogollon Sporting Association and the Payson Parks & Recreation Department, which co-sponsor the classic.

The Payson High School basketball awards ceremony is set for 6:30 p.m., March 19 in the events room at the Mazatzal Casino. It will fete both the girls and boys teams on all three levels, freshman through varsity.

During it, coaches will honor players with certificates, varsity letters and postseason all-star honors.
