Mike Curtis, Payson Men's Golf Association representative in last season's Arizona State Championship tournament, has begun the 2008 season with a bang.
In a PMGA-sponsored four-man scramble played March 19 at Payson Golf Course, Curtis teamed with Doug Talbot, Ed Kuhns and Doug Bailey to take first with a score of 52.1.
Curtis also pocketed closest-to-the-pin prize money on two holes. On No. 5, his tee shot rolled to within 7 feet, 3 inches of an ace. Curtis was within 3 feet, 5 inches of the flag on No. 14.
Trailing the winning foursome in the team standings by just .1 of a point was the squad of Larry Smith, John Peel, Van Bowman and John Calderwood.
Troy Neal, Herb Sherman, Don Kisseberth and Ron Bade were third at 52.8.
Closest-to-the-pin winners included Ron Lodge (No. 17, 9 feet, 7 inches), Al Lyons (No. 8, 4 feet, 11 inches) and Sherman (No. 2, 32 feet, 5 inches).
Prior to the beginning of the tournament, members of the PMGA met at the Payson Masonic Lodge for a traditional kick-off breakfast.
Next up for the golfers is a low-net flighted tournament to be held March 26 at PGC.
Also this summer, the PMGA will compete in several road tournaments including visits to Overgaard, Verde Santa Fe, Prescott Country Club and Silver Creek.
