Traveling between Laughlin, Nev. and Mesa in 1990, Joleen and Kelly Enerson discovered Payson. They spent the night here, woke up and, seeing how beautiful it was, the North Dakota couple decided this was the place they wanted to live.
It took them several years, but in January 1994 they moved here from Cavalier in the far northeast corner of North Dakota -- only 12 miles from the Canadian border.
Joleen has been in the beauty business for almost 43 years, owning and operating a salon for 26 years in North Dakota and serving as a North Dakota State Inspector for the Board of Cosmetology. Kelly farmed, and also owned and operated KDJ's Specialties, selling promotional materials to businesses and for special events.
With the move to Payson, the couple bought the beauty mart from its founders, Earl and Ramona Conrad, and renamed it KDJ's Beauty Mart & Salon.
"We needed to work, and the business was for sale," Joleen said of their reasons for buying the operation.
While Joleen ran the business, Kelly went into sales for Prestige Homes and helped at the family shop when he could.
"As KDJ's Beauty Mart & Salon began to prosper, Kelly was needed here on a regular, full-time basis," Joleen said.
She said she had not retailed many products in her beauty salon in North Dakota, "But I always wanted my own retail business. When I was a little girl, I always wanted to have my own cash register," she said, and laughed at the memory.
The Enersons carry about 25 different product lines, and if they don't have something a customer wants, they generally can order it, and they are willing to ship products. Kelly picks up stock from their supplier in the Phoenix area every week.
KDJ's Beauty Mart & Salon has hair care products, skin care supplies, nail goods, body care, wigs and hairpieces, and some supplies for beauty shops. Some of the most popular lines at KDJ's Beauty Mart & Salon are Matrix, Paul Mitchell, Redken and Nexxus. Of everything they carry, hair care products are what move the most, Kelly said.
"It's growing every year. We see a lot more new customers," Joleen said.
"We both enjoy working with the public," Kelly said. "We have some good, loyal customers from all over the Rim Country."
