Kayla Morgan is well known for her exploits on the basketball court, but it was her track and field expertise that earned the PHS junior some of her greatest accolades.
The plaudits arrived May 2 and 3 at the Class 3A East regional championships held at Blue Ridge High School in Lakeside.
They arrived in the form of the Most Valuable Athlete in the Field Events award given Morgan after she won two gold medals.
In the shot put, Morgan got off a firstplace heave of 34 feet, 5 inches. She also won the discus by unleashing a toss of 106 feet, 6 inches.
In the long jump, sophomore Maddie Nossek defended her East region championship with a leap of 15 feet, 7 inches.
Nikki DeWees stamped herself a state medal contender by taking the 300-meter hurdles gold in 49.9.
Also for Payson, the 4x400 relay team of Jenna Robertson, Janet Echols, DeWees and Nossek was first in 4:20.02.
No member of the PHS boys team won a gold medal.
The girls team managed a region second-place finish with 149.5 points. Blue Ridge claimed the crown, carding 181.5 points.
Among the boys teams, Payson finished last in the six-team field with just 35 points. With 180 points, Blue Ridge was first.
