The Payson Friends of Jazz and the Community Presbyterian Church present a special Mother's Day performance of jazz and blues vocalist Renee Patrick with special guest "Chicago's favorite Jazz Woman" Judy Roberts.
Bassist Ted Sistrunk and drummer Gerry Reynolds will provide accompaniment.
The concert will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 11 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson.
Born in Philadelphia, music is a way of life for Renee Patrick. Her father was a member of the world renowned Ink Spots, who was inducted into the Doo Wop Hall of Fame. Her mother is somewhat of a local legend having recorded with Terry Johnson of the Flamingos in Detroit's Motown, along with such greats as Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye.
Patrick's music is shockingly honest and emotionally charged. Listeners find her sound somewhat familiar, but one that is refreshingly original and inviting. A powerful voice combined with passionate delivery, her music captures the listener and doesn't let go.
The Chicago Tribune has awarded pianist/singer Judy Roberts the title "Chicago's Favorite Jazz Woman." Yet she is also recognized as a worldwide jazz star thanks to the success of her international jazz recordings and concert performances. From the Midwest to Phoenix to Singapore, Roberts is best known for her fun-loving approach to an eclectic and extensive repertoire, her hard-swinging piano playing, and for performing for her audiences in a relaxed and intimate style.
A multiple Grammy nominee, her 20-plus album/CD releases include the "The Other World," whose hit single "Senor Blues" was No. 1 on the jazz charts and in radio airplay; the album "Trio," with Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton; the song "Twilight World," co-written with piano diva Marian McPartland; and her international hit rendition of Dave Fishberg's "My Attorney Bernie."
While the event is free to the public, a $5 donation at the door helps assure that professional level musicians continue to be heard in Payson each month.
