Tonto Forest Campfire Restrictions In Place

Thursday, May 8, was the start of fire restrictions in the Tonto National Forest.

We all suspected that this would happen shortly, since the forest is very dry due to a lack of any measurable rainfall and unusually high winds for at least a month. The restrictions are:

  • No campfires will be allowed within the Payson and Pleasant Valley Ranger District.
  • Only petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns and heating devices are exempt and may still be used within the restricted areas.
  • A ban on smoking outside of a cleared area.
  • Power tools with combustible engines without a spark arresting device are also restricted except in developed areas.
  • Off-road vehicle traffic is also limited to numbered roads only. If you ride the Control Road, the vehicle needs to be street legal.
  • Target practice is no longer allowed.

If you need more information on these restrictions, please go to

Hellsgate Fire District

The next monthly meeting of the Hellsgate Fire District will be held at station #21 in Star Valley on May 14 at 7 p.m. Please try to attend these meetings, they help to keep you informed as to what is happening with the department.

Upcoming events

Friday, May 16 there will be a Scotch Doubles tournament at the Double D starting at 6 p.m. Bring a dish for a potluck supper.

Saturday, May 24, will be an exciting day for the residents of the village. Breakfast will be served at the Tonto Village Chapel starting at 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m.

This event is sponsored by the Hellsgate Fire District Auxiliary, aka Fireflies. Breakfast will include eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, orange juice and coffee. Chorizo burritos will also be available at an extra cost.

Later that same day, Ethel Cain and Betty Koutz will sponsor an arts and crafts display at the Double D Restaurant.

The artists are from the surrounding area. There will be something for everyone including a cotton candy machine, popcorn, and nachos with cheese.

The restaurant will feature a special menu of barbecue on a bun. May 24 promises to be a very busy day for the residents and for the people returning to their cabins for the summer. For those gals who were not in the village for the winter, there is a domino game held every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Tonto Village Chapel. Either "Mexican Train" or "Chicken Foot" is offered. Check it out, it is a lot of fun.

Tonto Village Chapel

A reminder that Pastor James Barker has scheduled a Sunday evening prayer service beginning in June.

The service will start at 6 p.m. Pastor Barker has also added another Bible study class on Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. along with a class on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m.

On May 14, Rick Prach of Tonto Village I will celebrate his birthday, then a few days later, on May 16, his wife, Sue Prach will celebrate her big day.

Just remember Rick and Sue, the importance of birthdays is not how many you've had but rather how well you've celebrated. Happy birthday!

Annette Godfrey will have her big day on May 17. Annette will be away from us in the village for a few years with a promise to return to the domino group.

We miss her and we all wish her a fantastic day to commemorate her birthday. Our heats are with you, Annette.

Pool results

The Tuesday evening tournament of nine-ball was held last week at the Double D with the following results: Bobbette "Bobbi" Davis won first place for the first time. Nanci Olsen and Betty Koutz shot for second and third places.

Congratulations to the winners.
