Merriam George Kohlbacher, 90, died April 30, 2008 in Roseville, Calif. He was born Sept. 22, 1917 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mr. Kohlbacher was a longtime resident of Jamestown, N.Y. before moving to West Chicago, Ill. for 11 years, and then retiring to Payson, where he resided for 16 years before moving to California in 1998 to be closer to family.

He attended Deveaux Military Academy and Jamestown High School. He served as an Army Gunner on the Queen Elizabeth and made 76 crossings transporting troops overseas during World War II.

Following his marriage to Margit Hanson on May 12, 1944, he joined the furniture business representing Jamestown Lounge at the Jamestown Furniture Mart and eventually managed the showroom at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, Ill. for 11 years.

Mr. Kohlbacher enjoyed falconry and loved listening to the big bands of the 1930s and 1940s.

He is survived by his loving family including his wife of 63 years, Margit; daughter, Susan Malijewski and husband Peter of Rocklin, Calif.; sons, Stephen Kohlbacher and wife LiLi of San Diego, Calif. and John Kohlbacher and wife Angela of Corcoran, Calif.; granddaughters, Katherine and Kristina; grandson, Andrew; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn G. Kohlbacher; mother, Emogene Merriam Kohlbacher; and brother, Sheldon B. Kohlbacher.

A graveside service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Cave Creek.
