Ethel Louisa Thornton Clasen of Payson, died April 24, 2008 at RTA Hospice in Payson. She was born Dec. 15, 1919 in Baltimore, Md. to Alma E. English and John English.

She was married to Walter F. Clasen and spent most of her life in San Antonio, Texas.

Mrs. Clasen worked for St. Mary's University for 35 years in San Antonio.

Two years ago, after spending 58 years in San Antonio, the Clasens moved to Payson to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law.

Mrs. Clasen loved arts and crafts and was an accomplished artist in original and still life oil paintings. Several family members and friends have her paintings for keepsakes.

Her special joy was the time spent at her cabin in the hill country of Texas.

Mrs. Clasen was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walter F. Clasen on March 22, 2008.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and John E. Tjernagel of Payson; two grandchildren, Michelle Tjernagel of Fargo, N.D. and Amy Tjernagel Wriedt of Chaska, Minn.; and one great-grandchild, Nolan.

A joint memorial service was held May 3, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Clasen's name to RTA Hospice, 511 S. Mud Springs Road, Payson, AZ 85541.
