Payson Men Die In Separate Plane Crashes

Payson lost two pilots this past week. Bradley Onion died in a plane crash in Montana May 23 and Shane Owens was killed in a crash north of Winslow Sunday.

According to reports in a Helena, Mont. newspaper, Onion and his wife, Sharon, were flying to a summer home in Alaska from Utah.

The report goes on to say their plane hit power lines and then a tree before crashing near Interstate 15.

Sharon Onion and the couple's two dogs survived the crash. Mrs. Onion reportedly had a broken leg and other minor injuries.

Friends of Owens said he was flying to Utah when he crashed. Details of the accident were not yet available.

Owens is the grandson of Kerm and Hazel Owens, who co-owned Owens Bros. Lumber of Payson. His parents are Kerm Jr. and Diane.

He started Tree Pro in 1997, later selling it to Cameron and Gina Vaughan in 2006.

According to his uncle, Errol Owens, also of Payson, he had been flying four or five years and made frequent trips to visit friends in Utah. The family has been told the crash is believed to have been caused by engine failure.

"Everybody knew him and everybody loved him," Errol Owens said.
