Relay For Life Shaping Into Big Blast

The Relay for Life event is shaping up to be one of the best parties around for 2008.

"So far we have 29 teams signed up," said team co-chair DJ Craig. That means at least 600 people will be on the field at Payson High School from 6 p.m., Friday, June 6 through 6 a.m., Saturday, June 7.

Rim Country residents of all ages can help make the 2008 Payson Relay for Life a big success, just as this little group helped the 2007 event raise more than $40,000 for cancer research.

There is still time to get a team together and sign up to participate, Craig said. Teams can sign up all the way to start time.

Those interested in supporting the event are welcome to do so at any time in any fashion. For instance, a direct cash contribution may be made to the committee or to a favorite team. Luminarias can be purchased for a free good will offering.

The bags that will be used to light the field at 9 a.m., Friday, June 6 are available at the Roundup's office, 708 N. Beeline Highway.

To find other locations to purchase a bag, call the coordinator for the luminarias Robin Holt at (928) 472-8400 or (928) 595-1968.

However you choose to participate in this special event, make sure it comes from the heart. Holt's own participation is a prime example.

"When I'm asked why I got involved with Relay for Life, the answer is simple -- my mom Roxie Lynn.

"Last year was the first year that I as on a team and started one because my mother has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. My grandma June had lost her fight a little over four years ago and my dad was just given an all clear after his battle. The fight had become personal.

"Just because my mom has won this battle against cancer does not mean we stop fighting. If cancer happens to one out of four people and I have four friends, one of them is going to have to fight for their lives. So, I started to help raise money for cancer research.

"Last year the Payson Relay for Life raised more than $40,000, but that is a small amount of the money it will take in research so another mother, another father, another friend, another child, does not have to wage a fight for their lives against cancer.

"There are four ways to make a difference: be a sponsor of Payson Relay for Life; start your own team; join my team; walk a lap and buy a hot dog."
