Carol La Valley, a Roundup reporter, and Patricia Gail Hearne, a freelance writer, were honored at the Arizona Press Women state conference which took place May 10 at Chaparral Suites Resort, Scottsdale.
La Valley won five awards; two second place honors, special articles for "Teachers turn lives around" and "Learning to function with autism;" third place honors for feature, nondaily newspaper, "Dog lost in car accident comes home;" for personal column, general, "They are not like us;" special articles, religion, "In Laid Back Arizona" and "Mass in the Wild West" and honorable mention, personality profile, "Alive and kicking."
Hearne won the top award in the the feature category for daily newspaper, for her story about the MGM Lion, published in The Arizona Republic.
She also won a feature story award for an article published in the Rim Country Gazette about the historic rock building that is part of the Julia Randall Elementary School.
Both are APW members.
