Summer Football, Basketball Programs Working Together

Because PHS football coach Josh Anderson and basketball coach Kenny Hayes are in the unique situation in which they assist one another in their sports, the two can tag-team the summer off-season program.

As Anderson's defensive coordinator, Hayes assists during summer football workouts. Conversely, Anderson -- a basketball assistant to Hayes -- is available in the summer to help teach hoop skills.

PHS basketball coach Kenny Hayes and football coach Josh Anderson tag-team the summer off-season program.

Which means the two programs overlap and it's not unusual to see both basketball and football players working out in the same weight training program.

Those sessions will be held 6 to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday during both June and July.

"Actually, the weight training is open to any student who wants to work out," Hayes said.

In football, the Longhorns players are scheduled to attend the Northern Arizona University Passing and Big Man's Camp June 1 and a similar camp at Arizona State University on June 4.

The Payson Summer Football Camp, for players in third through eighth grades, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. June 26 and 27 on the PHS football field.

The camp, which is co-sponsored by the town parks and recreation department, is an opportunity "to learn the secrets of Longhorn football and get coached by high school coaches and players," Anderson said.

The camp fee is $40 and registration must be completed by May 30.

On June 28, the football team will travel to Surprise for a passing league tournament.

Other tournaments will be held July 8, 10, 15 and 17 at Fountain Hills High School.

The off-season peaks July 21 to 24, when the high school camp is held on the field and in Wilson Dome.

When the 2008-2009 school year begins July 30, only afternoon practices will be held.

Summer hoop play

In addition to morning weight training, Hayes will host open gym sessions during the same hours.

That time provides players with the opportunity to fine tune their individual skills under the watchful eye of Hayes and play three-on-three half court games.

The team will also play June 13 to 14 in the Flagstaff Summer Invitational and June 27 to 28 at the Grand Canyon University team camp.

On June 5, the summer team travels to Scottsdale Christian Academy for a single game and return June 7 for a round robin.

The Longhorn youth basketball camp, for those in third through eighth grade will be held June 16 to 18 in Wilson Dome.

The fee is $40 and registration must be completed before May 30.

Sign-up for both the football and basketball youth camps may be done at P&R offices located at Green Valley Park or online at:

Copies of the summer football and basketball schedules are available in the PHS weight room during summer training sessions.
