Payson schools request for voters to renew a 10 percent maintenance and operations budget override failed in Tuesday’s election.
Voters denied the measure by 445 votes, with 52.6 percent opposed and 47.3 percent in favor with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
In the Payson school board election, Barbara Underwood, Richard Meyer and Matt Van Camp each won a seat, but candidate Buzz Walker’s bid was unsuccessful.
He lost with 20.3 percent of the vote. Underwood won the most votes of any school board candidate with 32.6 percent of the total vote. Van Camp came in second with 25.4 percent, followed by Meyer with 21.4 percent.
Underwood said her victory was bittersweet since she also sat on a committee to help pass the override. “It’s going to be a tough year, but we’ll get through it,” she said.
