Lady Longhorns celebrate their five-set win Friday against Fouintain Hills to become one of the final eight teams left seeking the 3A state volleyball title. Payson lost to Tuba City in five set late on Friday at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley.
After defeating No. 6 seeded Fountain hills 3-2, the Lady Longhorns gave No. 3 Tuba City all the fight the Warriors could handle before falling 3-2.
Action took place Nov. 7 in the Arizona State 3A volleyball tournament held at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley.
The Lady Horns took an 11th seed to the tournament after finishing third in the East regular season standings and third in the region tournament.
Pitted against favored Fountain Hills, many expected the Lady Horns to be “one and gone.” But the Rim Country netters rose to the challenge after losing the first game 25-17. Payson took the second 25-20 but decisively lost the third, 25-7.
Down but not out, Payson tied up the match 2-2 with a 25-17 victory. In the fifth and deciding game, Payson survived a 15-13 thriller. With the win, Payson advanced to the quarterfinals against the North region’s Tuba City.
The Lady Horns won the opener 25-17 but lost the second game 26-24 and the third 25-21. The never-say-die Lady Horns forced a fifth game with a 25-17 victory. In the finale, Payson ran out of gas, 15-5.
The final four features three teams - Monument Valley, Window Rock and Tuba City - from the North Region. The other final-four team, Safford, represents the South.
