The Payson Bears whipped the Cottonwood Seahawks 12-6 to win the Central Arizona Youth Football Association Mighty Mite Division championship.
The Bears’ win avenged an earlier season loss to the Seahawks who entered the championship showdown undefeated.
Angel Jacquez scored the winning TD for Payson.
The Bears’ roster featured one girl player, Emma Nelson, who was a team captain along with Clayton Randall, Kolten Ricke and Kelton Turney.
Also in CAYFA postseason action, four of the five Payson teams qualified for the championship tournament in which teams battled for first- through fourth-place honors. The Mighty Mite Redskins were third as were the Minor Raiders. The Major Division Raiders, coached by Billy Hardt for the past 19 years, took second.
His assistants are Scott Geske, Doug Bickert and Dan Cobb.
Coaching the Bears were Mike Conway, Jason Bland, Slade Gibson and Jeremy Rickey.
David Daniels, Jerry Daniels and Alvin Proctor coached the Redskins. Chris Barr, Darin Keith and Jason Peterson coached the Minor Raiders.
Grant Owens coached the Payson Wildcats during the season.
