Laura Meyocks knows how to win.
She’s a consistent champion on the Payson Women’s Golf Association circuit, several years ago she won a new truck at a Mazatzal Casino giveaway, and on Oct. 19 she was given the keys to a 2008 Dodge truck she won at the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino Arizona State 2008 Big Bass Open tournament.
As a registered nurse, she was also Johnny on the spot a few years ago to help save a fellow golfer who was suffering heart failure.
While Meyocks was the truck winner at the open, it was Tony Taylor who roared away with a Procraft Pro 186 SC Mercury bass boat for catching the biggest bass of the three-day fray — a 9.17-pound lunker.
Taylor also won one of four Polaris Sportsman 500 quads that were given away during the tournament.
The other three ATV winners are being verified, said the Mazatzal Casino’s Terri Shelow.
In the guess the weight contest, five winners were named each day, on the hour, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The $500 grand prize winner was Barbara Jackson.
April Besey won the grand prize in the Big Bass Roundup contest and Tom Collins was second.
In addition to the event featuring a tournament, raffles and contests, there was a Saturday night concert by national recording artist Eric Church and Rondavous.
Shelow estimates about 2,000 fans attended the concert, which also included a buffet barbecue.
Following the concert, Church participated in a meet-and-greet autograph session.
From Phoenix, country radio stations KMLE and KNIX brought four busloads of listeners who were contest winners.
Local Civil Air Patrol cadets were on hand Saturday evening to do the presentation of the colors.
Although the tournament was held at Roosevelt Lake, all other events were at the casino and hotel.
Sponsors included Bill Luke Dodge, Martin Marine, RideNow Powersports, Bison Homes, Holiday Motorhomes, Salt River Project, KMLE and KNIX.
