Senior David Carlen’s two touchdowns and a pair by sophomore Westin Gibson paced the Longhorn football team to a 41-8 East region win over the Alchesay Falcons.

The victory, which was posted Oct. 24 in PHS stadium, improves the state second ranked Longhorns’ record to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the East. Most importantly the win keeps Payson atop the East standings and the state power point rankings.

On Payson’s first possession of the game, Carlen found pay dirt on a 32-yard run. The TD coupled with Kyle Frewin’s conversion kick pushed the Horns out to a 7-0 lead.

With 9:05 remaining in the game and Payson nursing a 28-0 lead, Carlen scored again on a 23-yard run. The TD was set by a fumble recovery inside the Falcon 35. Payson led at that point 35-0 prompting coach Josh Anderson to send reserves into the game, many of them junior varsity players.

Gibson scored his first TD midway through the game on a 65-yard pass from quarterback Ridge Halenar. He scored again late in the fourth quarter, after taking over for Halenar at quarterback, on a 30-yard run.

Alchesay’s lone TD belongs to East region leading rusher Stephone Hanna on a 58-yard scamper with 7:38 remaining in the game.

The Horns final regular season game will be Oct. 31 against Snowflake.
