A woman hitchhiking down to the Valley on Highway 87 Friday night, was struck by a tractor-trailer and severely injured.
Karen Allred of Payson was walking south on the west side of the Beeline Highway, 500 feet south of the Mazatzal Casino intersection, when an Arizona semi struck her, causing severe trauma to both legs, said Sgt. John Heflin.
It is unclear if Allred, who is in her late 40s, was facing traffic when she was struck.
There is no bike lane in the section of road and it is very dark, he said.
“She was just barely in the roadway when she was struck,” Heflin said.
When authorities arrived, Allred was awake and conscious, but in critical condition. She was airlifted to a Scottsdale hospital.
The driver has not been cited, but the investigation is ongoing.
