Arts and Crafts Festival in Pine Aug. 30-31

The Pine-Strawberry Arts and Craft Guild will host an Arts and Crafts Festival Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30 and 31. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday.

More than 80 vendors will be on hand with creative crafts, beautiful artwork, food and drink.

The festival will be held in the Pine Community Center, located on North Highway 87 in Pine.

Labor Day Book Sale

The Pine Library Friends will host a Labor Day Book Sale in the library activity room behind the community center in Pine. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 30, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 31.

Labor Day Weekend BBQ in Tonto Village Aug. 30

The Hellsgate Fire District Auxiliary “Fireflies” will host a Labor Day Weekend Fund-Raiser Bar-B-Q from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at Fire Station 22 in Tonto Village — 151 Mathews Lane, 1 mile on Control Road off Highway 260 East.

We will be serving BBQ pork sandwiches, coleslaw, beans and fresh corn on the cob. Adults will be charged $7, and children age 10 and under will be $3.50.

There will also be a Bake Sale featuring cakes, fruit pies, cookies, breads and more. If you would like to donate baked goods, please call Janet at (928) 478-4575, or Ruth at (928) 478-0031.

The auction will start at 11:30 a.m. An air jumper for kids, and free blood pressure checks will also be available. A raffle will be held at 1 p.m. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and prizes include two handmade quilts, a chain saw, weed-eater, skill saw, fire pit and cactus fountain.

Celebrate Beaver Valley Day Saturday

Beaver Valley, northeast of Payson on Houston Mesa Road, is the place for fun and food this Saturday. The community will celebrate Beaver Valley Day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 30.

Pancakes prepared by the BVFD Auxiliary will be served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Beaver Valley Fire Station. There will be an arts and crafts show, a duck race in the East Verde River and live music at the barbecue featuring tri-tip beef.

Proceeds benefit the area’s volunteer fire department.

Free brush disposal

The Regional Payson Area Project, for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting.

On Saturday, Aug. 30, the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

Sunday, Aug. 31, the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. No household garbage, construction debris or other items will be accepted.

RPAP brush pits are intended for the use of private citizens who are working to clear their properties for wildfire risk reduction. Use by commercial haulers in prohibited.

Kohl’s Ranch Chapel to close after Labor Day

The chapel in the woods just east of Kohl’s Ranch will have its last worship service for 2008 at 8:30 a.m. this Sunday, Aug. 31. All are welcome.

Representatives of the Payson Christian Ministerial Fellowship conduct the services on Sunday mornings from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day each year.

Northern Gila County Fair coming Sept. 4-7

The 54th Annual Northern Gila County Fair takes place Sept. 4-7.

Premium books are now available for those who wish to enter. The books may be picked up at the Payson Parks and Recreation office in Green Valley Park or at both the Payson and Pine libraries. When you get a premium book, you will need to get tags for all your planned entries as well.

Fairgoers will enjoy rides, games, exhibits, a horse show, a livestock auction and Demolition Derby.

Exhibits will be at the Tonto Apache Exhibit Hall, southeast of the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino. Rides, games and livestock events will be at Payson Event Center, 1/2 mile south of town on Highway 87.

Give blood for chance win a Saturn

United Blood Services will sponsor a blood drive from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Forest Lakes Fire Department at #4 Merzville Road and Highway 260. There will be a pancake breakfast for all donors, and donors will automatically be entered in a drawing for a 2008 Saturn, to be held Sept. 17.

Donors must be 18 or older with a valid picture ID, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Please drink plenty of water before donating.

Grandparents Day Open House set for Sept. 6

In honor of National Assisted Living Week, Sept. 7-13, and Grandparents Day, Sept. 7, Powell House will host an open house for the citizens of Payson beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

Tours, cake and ice cream, and live music and entertainment will be featured.

Richard Loth will conduct two AARP Driving Safety classes in Rim Country during the month of September.
