While members of the Payson Men's Golf Association were showcasing their links skills in the White Mountains, their PWGA nine-hole counterparts were celebrating August's play at a recognition luncheon.

The men traveled Sept. 3 to Silver Creek Golf Course, northeast of Show Low, where they played in a low gross/low net formatted tournament.

Jessie Smith, who finished at 78, won the low gross title.

Among those playing low net, Don Castleman was first, Dick Harding second and Terry Lindsey third. Castleman posted a 69, Harding finished at 72, and Lindsey tallied a 75.

In the closest-to-the-pin competition, Silver Creek's No. 3 proved to be too much for the PMGA's finest.

"No player hit the green," PMGA member Dick Ceyler said.

Those from Payson who did pocket prize money included Mike McKee, No. 7 and No. 17; Doug Talbot, No. 15; and Castleman, No.13.

The PMGA returns to Payson Golf Course tomorrow, Sept. 10, in a "Select Drive, Three Scores, Three Drives Minimum" formatted tournament.

Adams on top

At the Lady Niners luncheon, the big winner was Ann Adams who was cited for finishing first in the President's Cup played over two weeks at Payson Golf Course. Kelly O'Neill and Norma Fallers received accolades for finishing second and third.

In a "three-blind mice" fray contested Aug. 21, Carol Webb, Isabella Sockrider and O'Neill refused to run after the farmer's wife to have their tails cut off with a carving knife, as the format suggests.

Rather the Lady Niner trio played on with O'Neill taking first and Sockrider and Webb tying for second.

With poet Thomas Ravenscroft's rhyme and musical round behind them, the nine-hole ladies moved Aug. 28 to a scramble played at PGC.

In it, the team of Mary Quigley, Johanne Krchgassnr and Webb tied for top honors with the team of Anita Dekowski, Julie Lynch, Judy McFall and Rose Devar.

Closest to the pin winners in August were Carolyn Davis and Anne Alschuler.

Quigley and Sockrider were honored for scoring birdies and Ce Ce McCain and Sockrider had chip-ins.

The Lady Niners play at 9 a.m. each Thursday at PGC. Anyone interested in joining should call Ann at (928) 468-6686 or Anita at (928) 474-3444.

Sockrider and McCain are in charge of September's play.
