Election Day Was Long, Despite Light Turnout

The Fireflies, the auxiliary to the Hellsgate Fire Department Station 22 and Station 23 take some time out to have a group picture taken. The Labor Day Barbecue was the most successful event that the auxiliary has put on to date.

My husband Bill and I worked at the election polls in the Zane Grey election district again this year along with Jeff and Diane Daniels, Jake Garrett, Linda Stailey and Karen Fascz.

It was a long day, but a rewarding one, especially to see and greet people from the surrounding area. However, the turnout for this primary election was very light.

The annual Labor Day Barbecue sponsored by the Tonto Village Fireflies Auxiliary of Station No. 22, Hellsgate Fire Department, was a huge success. Together with the auction, the raffle items, and the bake sale and the delicious deep-pit pork, which was deep-pitted by Bob Halener of Payson. Thank you, Bob, the meat was fantastic.

The Fireflies made a nice sum of money for our hardworking firefighters from stations #21, #22 and #23.

The Fireflies and Joan Norem, chairwoman, wish to thank Jeff Lemoine for doing such a great job as auctioneer and Gloria Alliger from the Payson Ranger District for their invaluable help. A big thank you to Dara Sutton for the many items she donated for the auction. Joan needs a big pat on the back for all the hard work she gave to the auxiliary for collecting all the auction items.

The raffle item winners were: Tim Massi of Tonto Village III, who had the winning ticket for the cactus fountain. The paisley quilt was won by Lieutenant Rick Washburn of Station No. 23, Mead Ranch. The fire pit was won by Lynn Wheeler of Dealer’s Choice Lane. The weed whacker was won by a Manuel Q. The Chinese red quilt was won by John Watson of Tonto Village I. The circular saw was won by Gary Norem of Tonto Village III. The chain saw was won by Steve Zierer of Tonto Village.

A huge thank you to all who helped to make this fund-raiser the most successful the auxiliary has ever sponsored. All the firefighters from all stations in the Hellsgate Fire Department especially thank the community for all the great support.

Fire department call-outs

Sunday, Aug. 30, was a busy day for our firefighters. They went out on at least two calls. One was a quad accident on the Control Road. The rider suffered a dislocated shoulder.

The other call was at Bear Flat. The call turned out to be more serious, with a gunshot wound that turned out to be deadly. The family of the deceased victim wish to express their appreciation for all of the efforts of the EMTs from Station No. 22 and No. 21. Everyone in Bear Flat express their profound sympathy to the family.
