Tonto Village Gearing Down From Labor Day

Tonto Village is gearing down from a whirlwind Labor Day weekend.

Hellsgate Fire Department was out in force for the Fireflies' barbecue and then had a few calls later that weekend.

Trina Kamp, founder of The Shelby School, was honored recently by the faculty and staff with a plaque for being the heart of Shelby School. The plaque was given to her in appreciation for her dedication to the school.

Many of our summer residents were in the village to enjoy the cooler weather and partake of the many activities going on at the fire station and the Double D Restaurant.

The only unpleasant happening was all of the quads and dirt bikes using the Control Road. The dust was so heavy that I had to keep my front door closed, not only for the noise but the dust.

Since my husband and I are trout fishermen, I check in with John Deihl of the Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery every so often. The last time I talked with him, he said that the stocking of the Tonto Creek has ended for the season.

The last stocking of trout was a few days before the Labor Day weekend. John did mention that fishing was not over, the hatchery is still stocking Woods Canyon Lake, every week through September and Bear Canyon Lake one time in September.

So keep those fishing poles handy and head to the Rim lakes, there are still trout left to hook.

Shelby School

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, Trina Kamp was surprised in her school office. Faculty and staff piled into her room and presented her with a plaque which read: "In appreciation of Trina Kamp, founder and heart of The Shelby School, with gratitude for your humor, honesty, and love, from the teachers and staff."

The Shelby School is a free, public charter school that serves grades K through 10, and it was founded in 1982 and chartered in 2000.

Hellsgate Fire Department

The fire department now has an up and running Web site with a host of valuable information on the firewise program and the activities of all the stations in the district. The Web site is: for the Hellsgate store to buy T-shirts, caps, etc. The Web site for the fire inspection program is

The Fireflies at station #22 in Tonto Village held their last meeting of the season on Monday, Sept. 8.

A review of all the committees was critiqued and will be refined for next year. Election of officers was also held. Voted into office for the 2009 year were: president, Nancy Yoakum; vice president, Dara Sutton; treasurer, Judie Derochers; and secretary, Janet Snyder. The new year will get started again on April 6, 2009. If there is any business to discuss, the executive committee will act on it in a timely manner.

Pool tournaments

Last Tuesday evening the nine-ball players took to the tables at the Double D Bar. Ethel Cain shot for the top spot. Patti Boeschling and Payge Ferriera took second and third places.

Sunday afternoon Tim Reed, Margaret Stasney and Payge Ferriera were the lucky winners at the eight-ball tournament. Congratulations to all the winners.

The next Scotch Doubles tournament will be at 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26 at the Double D. There are always munchies available, but there will also be a potluck. Grab your partner and a covered dish for an evening of fun.

Upcoming events

The owner of the Double D, Ethel Cain, has announced that there will be a costume party and potluck dinner for Halloween. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Rockin' Ron Gibson will be on hand to provide the music and keep things lively.

Start planning now on a great costume and I will announce the date and time in a future column.
