A Show Low Invitational tournament-ending "sister kisser" against archrival Snowflake propelled the Longhorn soccer team to a third-place finish in a field of eight teams.
Entering the finale, Snowflake needed the points a victory would produce to finish third in the fray played Sept. 12 and 13 on the campus of SLHS.
Payson only needed a tie to take home the tournament's bronze medal.
A 2-2 dead knot is exactly what unfolded allowing the Horns to escape the White Mountains with a third-place showing and a 4-2-1 overall record.
Payson finished the tourney 2-1-1 with seven points and Snowflake was 1-0-3 for six points.
In the Horns vs. Lobos skirmish, all the scoring took place in the first half, with Payson's tallies coming in the 16th and 17th minutes. Jerry Renteria scored Payson's opening goal after intercepting a pass and shooting underneath the diving Snowflake goalkeeper.
Phillip Leibundgut tallied the second goal after a throw-in from Dakoda Wholly and a header from Renteria.
The Longhorns opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Holbrook but rebounded later in the day to whip Monument Valley 5-0.
On the second day, Payson beat Verde Valley 3-1 before tying Snowflake.
In the win over Monument Valley, Renteria scored two goals and Omar Guerra, Shane Crisp and Wyatt MacRae contributed one each.
Trae Dunman and Leibundgut were credited with assists.
Against Verde Valley, Crisp heated up the offense scoring two goals and Renteria continued his stellar play with one score.
Nic Creighton and Brandon Moratti received assists.
The Longhorns travel Sept. 20 to Eagar-Springerville to take on the Round Valley Elks. Game times are 11 a.m. (jayvee) and 1 p.m. (varsity).
The annual Payson tournament will be played Sept. 26 and 27 at Rumsey Park.
