Looking Like Fall In The Village

The days in Tonto Village are starting to get a little crispy along with fall colors starting to emerge on some of the trees. I just love this time of year when the days are warm and the nights are chilly enough for a blanket for sleeping.

Some of my neighbors have been busy canning berries, apples, pears, pole beans, and, of course, what garden would be complete without the all-time favorite vegetable — zucchini? I also have noticed that many of the villagers have planted pumpkins for the Halloween celebration. October is just around the corner.

October meetings

The next regular meeting of the Tonto Village Water Improvement District will be at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the Tonto Village Fire Station. Please park in the back lot of the fire station, just turn onto Thompson from Johnson Boulevard. There is not enough room in the front of the station and there needs to be space enough for the fire engines to leave in case of an emergency.

The regular monthly meeting of the Hellsgate Fire Board is at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8 at station #21 in Star Valley.

Kevin Martin of Tonto Village II has decided to retire from the fire department. Lt. Rick Washburn, of station #23 in Mead and Collins Ranch, is hosting a retirement party for Kevin on Saturday, Sept. 27 at his home in Collins Ranch, 349 Brook Lane. The potluck dinner will start at 6 p.m. Come out and help Kevin go out in style!

Get well

Get well wishes to Melody Morris. Melody is recovering from surgery at Barrows in Phoenix. Melody is a senior at Payson High School and lives with her parents on Dealer’s Choice Road. Melody also works part-time at the Double D Restaurant The staff at the Double D and everyone in the village wishes Melody a speedy recovery.

My good friend Dara Sutton from Bear Flat will add another candle to her birthday cake on Sept. 28. Dara is very active in the Fireflies — the auxiliary to the Tonto Village chapter of Hellsgate Fire Department. Dara was treasurer for three years and did a marvelous job in keeping our finances on track.

Dara is also an avid domino player and comes to the village every Wednesday afternoon to get together with many of the gals from the village and the surrounding area.

My own personal greeting to you, Dara, I wish you nothing but the best birthday ever!

Also having a birthday is Payge Ferriera. She is formerly from the village, but now lives in Mesa del. Payge still plays pool in our tournaments and is often the winner or finishes in the top three. Happy birthday, Payge!

Pool results

Last Tuesday evening at the nine-ball tournament held at the Double D Bar, Payge shot for first place, followed by Judy Tolle from Christopher Creek and Double D owner, Ethel Cain.

Sunday afternoon the players for the eight-ball tournament got under way, and sure enough, Payge Ferriera shot for first place, again! Cliff Landrum from Mead Ranch and Payge’s husband, Joe, shot for second and third places. Way to go, Payge, you beat those guys!

A note of thanks

Sue Prach of Tonto Village I called 911 on Sept. 15 and the Hellsgate volunteer firefighters responded in record time. Sue would like to express her deep felt appreciation for the quick response and the compassion shown by the firefighters. They did a great job. Sue would also like to thank the team at Payson Regional Medical Center emergency room for their professionalism in responding to her emergency. Sue says, “Keep up the great work!”
