Shelly Camp

Name: Shelly Camp

School/subject: Payson High School, Resource English and Student Government Sponsor.

College degree and major: Special education with a minor in communications.

Years teaching: Second year, prior to that I was a nationally certified sign language interpreter.

Why do you teach? I teach because I love watching students make connections with what they are learning and how that will fit with the rest of their lives. I also love helping students reach their potential.

Personal motto/words of wisdom: Find the intrinsic part of yourself and then strive to be the person you know you can be.

Family: I have been married to my wonderfully supportive husband for 28 years and we have two wonderful sons who make us proud every day.

Pet peeve: People who complain without looking for a solution.

Favorite hobby or leisure activity: I love to scrapbook and hike.

Why Payson? My husband and I wanted a small town that had four seasons that was a short drive to family and friends in Tucson. So when a job opened at PHS, we jumped at it. We have been here since the middle of June and love the town and the people.

In school, who was your favorite teacher and why? I had two, first my sixth grade teacher because he helped me overcome my struggles with reading and set off a spark that continues today. Second, my senior English teacher. She didn’t cut me any slack when I didn’t want to work.

What was your favorite subject in school and why? History, because learning about the past is fascinating.

What was your favorite year in school and why? That would have to be when I went back to get my teaching credentials. I attended a liberal arts college that is environmentally-based. I enjoyed making connections to the environment.
