The Gila County Board of Supervisors are pleased to announce in honor of Earth Day the Buckhead Mesa Landfill will accept greenwaste at no charge on Saturday, April 18 to encourage residents to clear their property of weeds and brush in preparation of wildfire season.
Greenwaste includes trees, brush, grass clippings and leaves.
On May 9, the landfill fees will be waived for all appliances made of metal — washers, dryers, refrigerators, hot water heaters and other metal items. No trash of any kind can be mixed with the metal, so separate your loads.
In the past year, Gila County Recycling and Landfill Management has hauled 462 tons of paper products to Vista Paper Recycling in Scottsdale from the Payson area.
Items you can drop off in the bins include cardboard, newspaper, office paper, magazines, catalogs and junk mail. The bins in Payson are located at; Walmart, Green Valley Park, Rim Country Middle School, Gila County Complex, Pine-Strawberry School, Chaparral Pines, Payson Water Department and Payson Regional Medical Center.
The blue bin for paper drop off in Tonto Basin is located by the Gila County Yard.
Other items the landfill recycles includes used motor oil, car batteries, computers and bikes, these can be dropped off at no charge.
All residents can bring in five tires (without rims) per year for free and $2 per tire after the first five.
With the recycling of metal, paper, brush, tires and diverting hazardous products of oil, batteries and computers from the landfills in Gila County, each year an additional month is added to the life of our landfills.
