Foreign exchange student Filip Frojd tallied a team low 39 to lead the Longhorn golf team to a second-place finish at an East Region meet held April 14 at Silver Creek golf course near Show Low.
Frojd’s card was the third highest of the tournament behind defending state individual champion Kyle Jones and Nick Routheir, both of Snowflake.
Jones finished at 37 and Routheir at 38.
Trailing Frojd for Payson were Tyler Apps (45), Cody Waterman (46), Mason Dacanay (55) and Anthony Smith (55).
As a team, the Horns tallied a 185 and were tournament runners-up behind the Snowflake Lobos, who posted a 160.
With a 192, Show Low was third.
Trailing were Blue Ridge (194), Holbrook (204) and Show Low (208).
Chinle participated, but didn’t have the necessary five team members to qualify for a team score.
On the junior varsity level, the Horns joined a six-team field for a nine-hole tournament at Snowflake West.
There, Payson finished first with a card of 184.
Matt Bullard’s 43 led the PHS charge.
Alex Korth, who sometimes plays on the varsity team, posted a 44, Chandler Sylvester totaled a 47 and Jim Behrens turned in a 50. With a 53, Cody Bossert rounded out the PHS effort.
Trailing the Horns on the team scoreboard were Snowflake (187), Winslow (198), Mogollon (202), Holbrook (219), Blue Ridge (219) and Show Low (224).
Next up for the varsity is a regional meet today, April 21, at Pinetop Country Club. The jayvees will play at Pinetop Lakes.
