Watch out for flying wood chips and rolling pins Memorial Day weekend. The Sawdust Festival returns that weekend at the Payson Event Center.
After an absence of 16 years, the town is returning to another branch of its historic roots with a celebration of the logging industry.
Between 1975 and 1993 the community held the event each year, with competitors coming from around the country to participate. Contests included skill and time tests using both power and manual tools, plus their were some events just for fun: a greased pole climbing contest, log rolling, log tossing and cigar smoking — where the object was for two contestants to face off and try to put one another’s cigar out by spraying each other with water.
The revival will feature many of the same contests, with men and women competing in individual and team events. There will also be activities for families and children.
The events start at 10 a.m. both days and there will be at least $6,000 in prize money awarded.
The new Sawdust Festival is presented by the Town of Payson, the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, Tree Pro, Stihl and The Home Depot.
