Longhorn golfers fared well at the White Mountain Invitational against many of the opponents the team will go up against in the state championship.
Which is good news for the team’s 3A state hopes.
In the 12-team WMI field on April 17 and 18, the Horns managed a third-place finish, carding a 701 that was bested by only Safford (693) and powerful Snowflake (617).
With the bronze medal finish, the Horns out-dueled 3A teams from Florence, Wickenburg, Winslow, Show Low, Blue Ridge and Holbrook.
While Snowflake’s terrific trio of Kyle Jones (148), Jordan Henderson (152) and Nick Routhier (153) dominated the 18 holes of play, Payson had a good performance from freshman Tyler Apps who took 11th in the 56-player field. Filip Frojd was 13th, Cody Waterman took 21st and Mason Dacanay slid in 25th.
Apps posted a 169, Frojd a 171, Waterman a 179, and Dacanay turned in a 182.
Apps shot a 90 on the first 18 holes, which were played at Silver Creek Golf Course. He improved to a 79 on the second day when the tournament moved to Snowflake.
Frojd posted an 86 and 85. Waterman carded 91 on the first day and 88 on the second.
Dacanay’s final tally included scores of 90 and 92.
Also for Payson, Anthony Smith was 42nd with a 195.
The Longhorns return to links action April 24 and 25 at the Safford Bulldog Invitational to be held on the Mt. Graham course. On opening day, the teams play nine holes and on the second day they play a full 18.
The East regional golf tournament will be contested May 4 and 5 at a site to be determined.
