Members of the Payson Men’s Golf Association prepped for the upcoming club championship with a low-net tournament played July 29 at Payson Golf Course.
The club championship, one of the most prestigious tournaments of the summer, began Aug. 5 and will continue Aug. 12.
In the low-net fray, Ralph Lindo took first flight top honors with a 65. Ed West also carded a 65, but fell to second on a scorecard playoff. With a 66, Larry Smith was third.
In the second flight, Ross Robertson tallied a 65 and was first.
Robertson also pocketed closest-to-the-pin prize money on two holes.
On No. 5, his tee shot rolled to with 9 feet, 11 inches of the flag. On No. 14, he was within 2 feet, 7 inches.
His showing in the tournament came on the heels of him winning the fourth flight, low-gross championship of the President’s Cup tournament. In winning, he posted a 91.
Trailing Robertson in the second flight of the low-net tournament were Don Gyde and Bob Hendrie. Because both finished at 70, another scorecard playoff was needed to decide the order of finish. Closest-to-the-pin money winners other than Robertson were Steve Holmes (No. 2; 12 feet, 3 inches), Bill McKenna (No. 8; 10 feet, 4 inches) and Sil Egler (No. 17; 4 feet, 2 inches).
