Crucial For Visitors To Put Out Campfires

Where, oh where is the monsoon?

The rainfall for the Rim Country is such a dismal amount that everything is drying to a crisp!

I listened to our local radio station this morning and the announcer said that there were 14 fires going on in our surrounding area and 12 of them were started by humans. Doesn’t it register with people that since there has been no measurable amount of rain that the forest would be tinder dry?

I have repeatedly said in this column that you need to be absolutely sure that if you have a campfire, do not leave it until you are certain that the fire is totally out. That means drowning it with water and then putting dirt on top of it.

Please heed this advice. We all love our forest and we do not want to see the giant ponderosa pines look like charred sticks.

Get well wishes

Get well wishes to Betty Koutz’s mother, Georgia Rosenbam of Casa Grande. Georgia successfully came through a triple bypass operation last week.

Betty wishes to thank everyone who has supported her mother with good thoughts and prayers and concern.

Get better soon — there is still much joy ahead of you, Georgia.

Birthdays

Randy Slapnicka of Tonto Creek Estates will be celebrating his birthday Aug. 15. Randy is a successful entrepreneur in our area. He is co-owner with his wife Brenda, of Rancho Catch-a-Trout and Bugles Restaurant in Forest Lakes, besides being in real estate. You are quite busy, Randy, but stop on your day to enjoy it to the fullest.

Phon Sutton of Bear Flat will add another candle to his birthday cake on Aug. 17. Phon is a retired anesthetist and a retired firefighter from Hellsgate Fire Department.

Phon shares that birthday with Brenda Wilcox. Brenda is the wife of Pastor Charles Wilcox, who was the former pastor of the Tonto Village Chapel. Brenda also plays dominoes with the Domino Divas on Wednesdays when she gets a day off.

Enjoy the love, laughter, and limelight that is yours today. Happy birthday to all of you.

Big party!

The annual Labor Day Weekend Bash is just around the corner.

The Fireflies auxiliary is working very hard to get everything organized for another successful fund-raiser for the Hellsgate Fire Department. There are so many activities besides the great tasting deep pit barbecue pork dinner with fresh corn on the cob from Taylor, Ariz.

There will also be a garage sale, a bake sale, raffle tickets for sale for a chain saw, a beautiful quilt made by one of the Fireflies and a Wii with all the bells and whistles. The drawing will be held at 1 p.m.

Larry Ellis will also be on hand to play your favorite tunes and maybe a bit of karaoke.

The firemen will also be selling T-shirts with the Hellsgate logo on them. Caps will also be for sale.

For the kids, there will be an air jumper.

Mark your calendar for this great event for Tonto Village and the Hellsgate Fire Department. Sept. 5 is the big day, starting at 11 a.m. and lasting until 2 p.m. See you there!

Pool results

The group of gals that play nine-ball on Tuesday evenings at the Double D got together and once again the Tonto Village gals were beat out of the competition by the gals from Christopher Creek and Kohl’s Ranch. The winners were Nanci Olson, Sherri Roebuck and Patty Boeschling.

There was no Sunday eight-ball tournament due to the lack of players. Come on, pool players, get those cue sticks out and join in the fun on Sunday afternoon, about 3 p.m.
