Payson High School students Brett Goodwin and Justin Richardson from teacher Devon Wells’ Culinary Arts Program are preparing for a high-level statewide culinary competition. The winner will be named the U.S. Foodservice Student Chef of the Year.
Payson High School is the only high school in Arizona to have two students in the top ten.
Juniors who placed in the top five at the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program competition last school year were asked to compete in this American Culinary Federation-sanctioned event. All students in the top ten are preparing for the competition in case anyone in the top five cannot compete.
Goodwin and Richardson have been in the Culinary Arts Program for four years. Wells said, “This is a wonderful opportunity and both boys are accepting the challenge. They are competing for medals that will not only stay with them the rest of their culinary futures, but are on the professional chefs’ level.”
