The countdown to the end of August and the summer season is fast approaching. The nights are cooling down to the high 40s. That’s blanket weather! My own personal indicator of the weather changing is that I wear my socks to bed. I have been wearing them for a week now. I am sorry to see the summer end, and especially to the end of stocking of the trout in the creeks. I have been lucky enough to land a few large trout, large enough to stuff with cornbread and crab stuffing and bake them on the grill. Delicious!
The only really good thing to the end of summer is the annual barbecue sponsored by the Hellsgate Fireflies. This event has grown over the years as one of the highlights of the season. Some things have gone by the wayside, such as the infamous “chicken drop” and the quad parade, and the pie in the face with the fire chief, but other really great things have taken their place, such as a pie auction, a kiddie jumper, a rummage sale, and live music provided by the DJ Larry Ellis. Our local artist “Scotty” will have an art display of his paintings. All these activities are happening Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Tonto Village Fire Station on Mathews Lane. The activities begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. The drawing for the great raffle items — the handmade quilt, the Stihl chain saw and the Nintendo Wii — will be held at 2 p.m. You need not be present to win these great prizes. But the meal should not be missed. The meal features a pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, beans and fresh corn on the cob purchased at the farm in Taylor, Ariz. The cost of the meal is $7 and the kids meal is $3 for ages 10 and under. All the great fire trucks and equipment will be on display and the firefighters will be on hand to tell everyone what the function of each vehicle is. The firefighters will also be administering free blood pressure checks throughout the day. Try not to miss this wonderful event and don’t forget that this is a fund-raiser for our very own firefighters who do such a wonderful service for our community. Come and shake their hands and tell them “thank you” for their time and energy and special training that they must go through for our safety’s sake.
Water improvement district
A monthly meeting of the water improvement district will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1 at the Hellsgate fire station in Tonto Village. The meeting is open to the public and all the residents of the Village are invited to attend.
If you have recently driven past the parking lot in back of the fire department, you know that there is a huge bladder there. The bladder is filled with water and will be used by the firefighters in case of a home or forest fire. It has been misused by some of the children in the neighborhood. They have been spotted jumping on it. This is no toy, and should not be used as a toy for the kids. Parents, please tell the children to stay off the bladder.
The Sunday eight-ball tournament at the Double D got started about 3 p.m. Cliff Landrum shot for first place followed by Harvey Poyner and Ethel Cain.
The gals took over the tables on Tuesday evening and the big winner was Judy Tolle. Payge Fierra and Ethel Cain shot for second and third places. Payge was lucky enough to win the pot for the nine-ball break. Congratulations to all the winners.
