Desi Burris was the lone Lady Longhorn volleyball player selected to the Class 1A-3A All-State team when selections were announced Dec. 6.
The Payson High senior, a three-year varsity letter winner, received honorable mention accolades on the prestigious team.
The All-State honor arrives on the heels of Burris being selected to the All-East Region first team.
Throughout her prep career, Burris proved to be one of the most well-rounded players to ever don a Payson High School uniform.
During each year of her varsity career she finished first or second on the team in serving efficiency.
This season she led the team in aces with 83 and was second in assists with 298.
Playing opposite hitter, she was also a determined blocker.
“Two games defined her season,” coach Arnold Stonebrink said.
“One was when she served like crazy against Winslow in the Coconino Tournament. The score was Desi Burris 15, Winslow 0.”
The other defining game was in a state opening-round loss to Sedona.
Against the Scorpions, she hit .429 and had four kills. Both marks were second best among the Lady Horns.
She also led the team in serve-receiving efficiency, serving efficiency, and aces (two).
She also contributed three block assists, three digs and two assists.
“She was wonderful in her last match of her career,” Stonebrink said. “She reserved her best all-around game for the big stage.”
The 1A-3A Player of the Year on the All-State team was Chanel Brown, a senior outside hitter, from Chandler Valley Christian.
