$400 prize awaits best holiday lighting display

The fifth annual Holiday Lighting Contest for residents of Payson and Star Valley boasts a whopping $400 first prize this year.

Entries are due at the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce by noon, Friday, Dec. 11. Entry forms are available at the chamber office at the corner of the Beeline Highway and West Main Street or online at www.rimcountrychamber.com.

Judging will be held the evenings of Dec. 14 and Dec. 15, with winners announced Friday, Dec. 18.

In addition to the $400 first prize; $250 will be awarded to the second place entry; $150 to the third place display; and four honorable mentions will each be awarded $50.

APS, the Town of Star Valley, the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Payson Roundup are sponsoring the 2009 Holiday Lighting Contest.

Christmas gift sale set

Wonderful handmade items will be sold at the Community Presbyterian Church from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8 and Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Local crafters have one-of-a-kind, quality items for sale at great prices to meet holiday gift giving needs. There will be baked goodies, children’s items, wine jelly, quilts and much more. Refreshments will be served.

The Community Presbyterian Church is at 800 W. Main St.

Payson area blood drives

Blood drives in the area this month include:

Kirkpatrick staff in Payson

In an effort to ensure that voices from across the district can be heard in Washington, staff members for the office of Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick will be hosting open office hours in Payson from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the Board of Supervisors Office, 610 E. Highway 260.

Take a walk in the woods

Foresters are inviting area residents to take a walk in the woods to discuss forest health and restoration. Ecologists and foresters will be leading the walk, which will be from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Dec. 8. Meet at the Payson Ranger Station, 1009 E. Highway 260, and load up vans for two forest stops.

Wildlife Encounters

The Payson Community Christian School, 213 S. Colcord, will host the Wildlife Encounters program Wild About Animals at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8. The show features real wildlife and experts in the field.

PES concert

The students at Payson Elementary School will present their annual holiday concert from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the Payson High School Auditorium.

All kindergarten through third-grade students, as well as fourth- and fifth-grade students in the PES Chorus will present a variety of holiday songs. Parents as well as the community are invited to attend. There is no admission charge.

Pine library

The Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library has several upcoming activities. The next movie madness day is at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 9. The featured movie is “G” rated “Santa Buddies.” Refreshments are served and this is a great way for youngsters to hang out in a safe setting with their friends.

There will be two additional movie madness events in December coinciding with the Pine-Strawberry School’s Christmas break, which begins Monday, Dec. 21 through Sunday, Jan. 3. Classes will resume Monday, Jan. 4.

Midweek Advent Services

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane, is holding Midweek Advent Services in preparation of the celebration of the birth of Jesus.

Services will be at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 9 and at 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 17. The theme for the Advent services will be The Stories of Advent.

Flu shot restrictions lifted, clinic set at Julia Randall

There will be a free flu shot clinic from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 at Julia Randall Elementary School gymnasium, 902 W. Main St.

All restrictions with regards to who can receive the H1N1 vaccine were lifted Dec. 7 in Gila County. Anyone who comes into the free vaccine clinic scheduled for Friday, Dec. 11 at Julia Randall Elementary School, or presents themselves at the Gila County Health Department can receive the H1N1 vaccine. 

Wine & Cheese benefit

Soroptimist International of Zane Grey Country will have its annual Holiday Wine & Cheese benefit from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 at the Rim Country Museum.

At the event, the $15,000 pledged at the 6th annual Up, Up and Away with Domestic Violence Radiothon will be presented to local charities. Tickets for the event are $15.

Chamber mixer

The December Chamber Mixer is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 at Crabdree Insurance, 111 W. Cedar Lane. Admission is $3 for chamber members and $5 for non-members. Call the chamber at (928) 474-4515 to make a reservation.

Rummage sale

The Church on Randall Place in Pine is hosting a rummage sale Saturday, Dec. 12. To donate, bring materials for the sale between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Participants choose how much they want to pay. The sale is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be hot drinks and baked goods for sale.

Wreath sale

New Hope Equine Rescue will be offering a limited number of classic Christmas wreaths in front of Bashas’ from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12. The wreaths are made from fresh evergreen boughs from Minnesota.

Jewelry sale

The Isabelle Hunt Memorial Public Library will have a sterling silver jewelry sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12 inside the library, which is at 6124 N. Randall Place, Pine. There will also be Native American inlay jewelry available.

Christmas for the Animals

A day of “Christmas for the Animals” will be held at three events Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visit the Humane Society Thrift Store at 400 W. Main St. for Christmas shopping. Stop in at the Humane Society Shelter’s Open House, 812 S. McLane Road, and “Take One Home for the Holidays.” Enjoy a Humane Society Christmas Boutique and Bake Sale at the home of Julie Coleman, 1501 W. Mesa Dr. Homemade crafts, collectibles and baked goods will be available for sale at affordable prices, and the new Humane Society “Favorite Recipes for People and Pets” cookbook will be making its debut with samples for tasting.

Proceeds from all three events go to care for the animals at the shelter. Parking is limited at all three places, so please try to carpool. For information, call Julie Coleman at (928) 951-4884.

Payson Choral Society offers ‘A Joyous Noel!’

The Payson Choral Society’s Christmas concert, “A Joyous Noel,” directed by Daria Mason with accompaniment by Victoria Harris comes to the Payson High School auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 12. Performances are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Concert tickets are $8 for adults, students, and children are free. Tickets may be purchased in advance from Choral Society members, at The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, and at the library. Tickets will also be available at the door before each concert.

Proceeds from the concerts provide musical scholarships to middle school and high school students. These are awarded each year at the spring concert.

Dec. 13 Sunday

Have a Jazzy Christmas

Pete Pancrazi, jazz guitarist and vocalist, brings jazzy Christmas sounds to Payson at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13 at the Payson Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St. Beth Lederman will accompany him on piano and keyboard, Vic Kottner on string bass, and Gerry Reynolds on drums. Refreshments will be included, and a donation may be given to support the program costs. Reserving a seat is advised, as seating is limited to 200. Gila county food drive 

Gila County would like to invite the community to participate in a food drive taking place at local county office buildings and the landfill scale-house. The next time you visit one of the county offices or the landfill, please bring canned or dry goods to contribute to the local food banks. Please help make the holidays better for those families and individuals who are in need.
