Christmas Songs Bring Back Memories

The Tonto Village area is still without electricity as of Wednesday. The power went out Monday afternoon and workers could not provide a specific time for power to be restored as of mid-day Wednesday.

Phone service, which has also been out of service for more than day, was restored early on Wednesday.

Advent has begun — the countdown to the celebration of the birth of Jesus. As you go about your day shopping for just the right gifts for your loved ones, take some time out for reflections of all the good that has come your way this year and give the thanks to Jesus.

The Christmas songs have also begun on the radio. I love the old songs, they remind me of my childhood and my mind brings up pictures of snow piled up in the middle of the streets and seeing the store windows transformed into beautiful Christmas scenes.

Back then, my family never put the tree up until Christmas Eve. My Dad would always bring home the ugliest tree, but we acted enthusiastic about it and we always had a bunch of homemade decorations that we had made in school.

Grandson joins Marines

I especially will keep Jesus close by along with his angels to watch over our grandson Brian Snyder of Yuma. Brian left for basic training Monday with the Marine Corps at the Marine Corps training station in San Diego. The family can only guess where Brian will be shipped when his training is completed; but a good guess would be that awful place called Afghanistan.

Did you know ... “Xmas” isn’t really an attempt to “X” Christ out of Christmas. In Greek, “X” is the letter “chi,” the first letter of “Christ” and a commonly abbreviated way the early Christians referred to Christ.

Meetings and parties

The Hellsgate Fire Department will be holding their annual Christmas party on Dec. 19.

The party will again be held at the community room at the Lamplighter Trailer Park in Star Valley. All current firefighters, fire board members, their spouses, along with both auxiliaries, the “Starlights” and the “Fireflies” and their spouses are invited. The party will begin at 6 p.m. Please RSVP at the administrative office in Star Valley. The phone number is 474-3835.

Get well wishes

Former Tonto Village Fire Department fire chief, J.R. Alliger, is now in Scottsdale Osborne Hospital, in the Select Specialty Medical Center. Cards can be sent to J.R. at the hospital. The address is 7400 E. Osborne, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. He is on the third floor. According to his wife, Gloria, he is slowly improving and will soon be able to accept visitors. We all wish him well.

Double D pool results

The Double D gals got together last Tuesday evening for their weekly game of nine-ball.

The winners were Betty Koutz, Payge Ferriera and Ethel Cain.

The popular Scotch Doubles tournament will be held tonight, Friday, Dec. 11 with a potluck dinner. Results next week.
