Pete Pancrazi, jazz guitarist and vocalist, brings jazzy Christmas sounds to Payson at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13 at the Payson Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St. Beth Lederman will accompany him on piano and keyboard, Vic Kottner on string bass, and Gerry Reynolds on drums. Refreshments will be included, and a donation may be given to support the program costs. Reserving a seat is advised, as seating is limited to 200. Christmas store at FES

Frontier Elementary School has a Christmas store stocked with crafts goods and more from area crafters and vendors for the shopping convenience of students, their parents and the community. Prices range from 25-cent items to delicious baked goods, unique jewelry, beautiful arrangements and everything in between. The store is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 for students and their parents and will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12 for the public. Frontier Elementary is at 1000 E. Frontier St., Payson.

Flu shot restrictions lifted, clinic set at Julia Randall

There will be a free flu shot clinic from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 at Julia Randall Elementary School gymnasium, 902 W. Main St.

All restrictions with regards to who can receive the H1N1 vaccine were lifted Dec. 7 in Gila County. Anyone who comes into the free vaccine clinic scheduled for Friday, Dec. 11 at Julia Randall Elementary School, or presents themselves at the Gila County Health Department can receive the H1N1 vaccine.

Winter Fest at PES

Payson Elementary School will have its annual Winter Fest from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11. Events will take place around the school and include a silent auction for gift baskets, which closes at 6:45; a bake sale and cake walk; games for children; and refreshments.

Wine & Cheese benefit

Soroptimist International of Zane Grey Country will have its annual Holiday Wine & Cheese benefit from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 at the Rim Country Museum.

At the event, the $15,000 pledged at the sixth annual Up, Up and Away with Domestic Violence Radiothon will be presented to local charities. Tickets for the event are $15.

Chamber mixer

The December Chamber mixer is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 at Crabdree Insurance, 111 W. Cedar Lane. Admission is $3 for chamber members and $5 for non-members. Call the chamber at (928) 474-4515 to make a reservation.

Weather closes brush pits 

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project for a Fire Wise Rim Country free brush drop-offs will be closed due to the major winter storm forecasted for the area.

Hike Cypress and Boulders Loop Trails Saturday

Residents and visitors are invited to participate in a hike of the Cypress and Boulders Loop trails at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 12. It is 5 miles round trip of moderately difficult hiking. The hike starts at the east end of Phoenix Street at the Cypress Trail access and goes around the Boulders Loop Trail before returning to Phoenix Street. Don’t forget hiking sticks, water and appropriate cold-weather clothing. The hike will be held, rain or shine. Rummage sale

The Church on Randall Place in Pine is hosting a rummage sale Saturday, Dec. 12. To donate, bring materials for the sale between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Participants choose how much they want to pay. The sale is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be hot drinks and baked goods for sale.

Wreath sale

New Hope Equine Rescue will be offering a limited number of classic Christmas wreaths in front of Bashas’ from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12. The wreaths are made from fresh evergreen boughs from Minnesota.

Jewelry sale

The Isabelle Hunt Memorial Public Library will have a sterling silver jewelry sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12 inside the library, which is at 6124 N. Randall Place, Pine. There will also be Native American inlay jewelry available. For more information, call (928) 476-3678.

Christmas for the Animals

A day of “Christmas for the Animals” will be held at three events Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visit the Humane Society Thrift Store at 400 W. Main St. for Christmas shopping. Stop in at the Humane Society Shelter’s Open House, 812 S. McLane Road, and “Take One Home for the Holidays.” Enjoy a Humane Society Christmas Boutique and Bake Sale at the home of Julie Coleman, 1501 W. Mesa Dr. Homemade crafts, collectibles and baked goods will be available for sale at affordable prices, and the new Humane Society “Favorite Recipes for People and Pets” cookbook will be making its debut with samples for tasting.

Proceeds from all three events go to care for the animals at the shelter. Parking is limited at all three places, so please try to carpool. For information, call Julie Coleman at (928) 951-4884.

Bake sale

The Kiwanis Builders Club (the Kiwanis program for children in middle school) will have a bake sale at Macky’s Grill from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday Dec. 12. The public is invited to come out and support Payson’s future leaders.

Following is the schedule of events for December.

• Saturday, Dec. 12: noon to 1 p.m. — Spy Club Book Club for ages 8 and older. Bring a book for our Christmas party exchange!

• Saturday, Dec. 26: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Video Game Free Play for ages 10 and older. Xbox 360 and PS2 free for all. Show off that new game you got for Christmas!

• Wednesday, Dec. 30: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. — Anime Manga Cosplay for middle/high schoolers. Movies, games and food.

• Tuesdays: 10 a.m. — Tykes & Toddlers Storytime, geared for children age 6 months to 2 years. Bounces, ticklers, songs and stories.

• Wednesdays: 10:30 a.m. — Preschool Storytime geared for children age 3-5 years. Puppet shows, stories, crafts and games.

• Thursdays: 4 p.m. — Bilingual Storytime! Stories in English and Spanish.

• Thursdays: 4:30 p.m. — Afterschool Crafts. Different projects weekly.

• Fridays: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. — Creative Writing for third- and fifth-graders.

• Fridays: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. — Creative Writing for middle and high schoolers.

‘A Joyous Noel!’

The Payson Choral Society’s Christmas concert, “A Joyous Noel,” directed by Daria Mason with accompaniment by Victoria Harris comes to the Payson High School auditorium Saturday, Dec. 12. Performances are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Concert tickets are $8 for adults, students and children are free. Tickets may be purchased in advance from Choral Society members, at The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, and at the library. Tickets will also be available at the door before each concert.

Proceeds from the concerts provide musical scholarships to middle school and high school students. These are awarded each year at the spring concert.

Marcy’s Kids benefit

For the last three years, the Modified Motorcycle Association Rim Country District, AAA Transportation and AAA MedEx have sponsored the Toys for Marcy’s Kids toy drive and fund-raiser. Marcy’s Kids are at-risk youngsters, ages 2-15, who eagerly look forward to Santa’s visit. The annual fund-raising dinner will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Lamplighter RV Resort in Star Valley (south of East Highway 260, just east of Payson). Everyone is invited and encouraged to bring a gift or a cash donation and enjoy the food, music and Santa Claus. The sponsors have donated toys, bikes, clothes and cash for these very special kids. Employees and the management at AAA Transportation and AAA MedEx have been collecting the toys and donations since Thanksgiving and everything donated will be presented to the children at 4 p.m., Dec. 19. Children’s concert

The Payson Children’s Theater Choral Group will be presenting “Peanut Butter Christmas” at 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13 at Ponderosa Baptist Church. Janice Weldon directs the group, comprised of 39 first- through sixth-graders. “Peanut Butter Christmas” is the third annual Christmas presentation by the group. Ponderosa Baptist Church is at 1800 N. Beeline Highway (just south of Home Depot.) There is no charge and the community is encouraged to attend.

Gila County food drive 

Gila County would like to invite the community to participate in a food drive taking place at local county office buildings and the landfill scale-house. The next time you visit one of the county offices or the landfill, please bring canned or dry goods to contribute to the local food banks. Please help make the holidays better for those families and individuals who are in need.
