Now that the town-sponsored fifth and sixth grade basketball program is up and running, sports coordinator Joe Harris is turning his attention to other youth programs including the third and fourth grade hoop league.

Registration for it begins Jan. 4 and will continue for one month. Harris emphasizes that those who register after the deadline will be placed on a team only if space permits.

His best hope is that parents don’t wait until the last minute to sign-up as some did during fifth and sixth grade registration.

He explains that tardiness makes it doubly tough to schedule league play and can possibly result is some children being left out.

The registration fee is $25, which includes a reversible NBA-style jersey. Games will begin Feb. 20 and will be played on Saturdays in Rim Country Middle School gym.

A parks and recreation offering that is dear to Harris’ heart is Little Longhorn wrestling.

He’s particularly fond of it because he’s a Payson High School assistant wrestling coach and knows the program is the foundation where Longhorn wrestlers are molded.

“Be a part of the future wrestling team for Payson High School,” says Harris.

Registration begins Jan. 11 and will continue to Feb. 11. The fee is $25 and the program is open to students in grades three through eight. The program begins Feb. 23 and continues for four weeks.

At the conclusion of the camp, a tournament will be held in Wilson Dome.

A bonus, Harris says, is that each camper has the option of volunteering to assist at the Arizona State High School Dual meet State Championship to be contested Feb. 19 and Feb. 20 in Wilson Dome.

That opportunity will give fledgling grapplers an up close and personal glimpse of high school wrestling at its finest.

Other upcoming offerings that Harris will oversee include the annual Spring Break Recreation Program, Spring Break Sports Camp, Youth Soccer League and Youth T-Ball.

Registration for the Spring Break Recreation Program is Feb. 1 to Feb. 25 and it will be held 8 a.m. to noon, March 8 to March 11 in old PHS gym and Julia assist at the Arizona State High School Dual meet State Championship to be contested Feb. 19 and Feb. 20 in Wilson Dome.

Registration for the Spring Break Recreation Program is Feb. 1 to Feb. 25 and it will be held 8 a.m. to noon, March 8 to March 11 in old PHS gym and Julia Randall Elementary gym.

Registration for the sports camp is now open, and sessions will be held 8 a.m. to noon March 16 to March 19 at Rumsey Park.

The fee for both the program and camp is $30 each, which includes supplies and snacks.

Camp sport offerings include soccer, flag football, disc golf, basketball and volleyball.

Harris stresses that for the two programs registration is required — “This is not a drop-in program, and space is limited.”

Youth Soccer League registration is Jan. 25 to March 8 and sign-up for T-Ball is March 22 to May 3. Fee for each is $25.

In soccer, youths will be placed in one of six divisions which are: pre-kindergarten-kindergarten, first and second, third and fourth, fifth and sixth, seventh and eighth, and ninth through 12th grades.

For T-ball, players at the first- and second-grade level have the option of switching to coach-pitch baseball.
