Fire sirens were heard throughout the village on Monday evening, Feb 2, heading for a one-alarm fire in Mead Ranch. My emergency radio was on and one of the firefighters who was on the scene first said that it was a structure fire and all water tenders were needed.
Hellsgate firefighters from station #23, Mead Ranch were first on scene. Stations #21 and #22 also responded and Christopher Kohl’s were on standby. According to one of the residents of Mead Ranch, the structure was a guest cabin on a resident’s property only a few homes down from her cabin. The resident had just finished a remodel of the cabin. The cabin was a total loss.
A full-time resident, Jimmy “Rabbit” Stephenson, was the first one to spot the fire just south of his cabin. Since he does not have a telephone, he jumped in his car and beeped his car horn all the way to Hellsgate Fire Department Lt. Rick Washburn’s house.
He came back and tried to help contain the fire with his garden hose. As soon as Rick, Bill Beller and Lenny Trujillo from station #23, arrived with their fire truck, Jimmy was relieved of his garden hose. It looks to me like Jimmy is a hero. Thank you for being a really good neighbor, Jimmy!
The Hellsgate Fire Board will meet Feb. 11, at station #22 in Tonto Village. The meeting will get under way at 5:30 p.m. The meetings are always open to the public and everyone in the district is urged to attend.
