What is the difference between hunting and cock fighting?

When I was a kid I loved to hunt. I preferred shooting something alive to targets. As an old man I seem to feel sorry for the animals. I still love to see a father take his son or daughter hunting, so you see I am confused.
Here’s what I’m wondering about. Why do we in Arizona say it’s OK to hunt, but are against cock fighting?
The answer might be that the hunter kills for food. Would cock fighting be OK if after watching the kill they ate the chicken?
