Ryan Nishijima lost control of his vehicle Thursday north of Payson on Highway 87 near milepost 255.

The owner of Cardo’s Italian Restaurant went spinning off Highway 87 Thursday morning in his silver BMW, authorities said.

Ryan Nishijima was heading north on the Beeline Highway around 10:50 a.m. just outside of town near milepost 255 when he lost control of his BMW and slid into a turnout, said Department of Public Safety officer Doc Dimbat.

“When he came back onto the highway the car rotated 180 degrees with the front end facing

southbound traffic,” Dimbat said. The car then rolled down an embankment landing on its roof. Sometime during the incident at least one tire blew out.

When authorities arrived on scene, Nishijima had already escaped from the vehicle and was waiting on the side of the road.

Nishijima was flown to a Scottsdale hospital in stable condition.

“If everything turns out OK with the CAT scan, he should be released today,” Dimbat said.

The Payson Police Department and Gila County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control.

This is not the first accident DPS has responded to on Highway 87 or 260 this week. On Saturday, DPS investigated an accident involving injuries near milepost 228, around 22 miles south of town. On Monday morning, another motorist rolled on Highway 260 near Christopher Creek and several hours later, another accident occurred on Highway 87 near 242. None of the accidents involved fatalities.
