A season that tipped off in November with hopes of the Longhorns winning a state championship after back-to-back 3A runner-up finishes, ended Feb. 27 in Chinle with a 67-57 loss to the Wildcats.
Playing in front of about 5,000 Navajo Nation fans in the Wildcat Den, the Horns (19-11) fell behind 24-13 midway through the second quarter and could never muster a sustained rally.
The loss, which occurred in the state tournament quarterfinals, eliminates PHS from the state tournament.
Coach Kenny Hayes attributed the defeat to “playing terrible defense the entire game.”
Although the Horns did fall short of their goal of winning a state crown, the team did win both the East region regular season and tournament titles.
In other quarterfinal games, Estrella Foothills beat Fountain Hills, 90-68, Safford downed Chino Valley, 61-43 and Winslow nipped Window Rock, 55-54.
With only four teams remaining in the tournament, action shifts March 6 to Jobbing.com Arena in Glendale.
