It was only a two-hour event, but it raised 900 pounds of groceries for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. On Jan. 4, Bashas’ donated 10 percent of sales between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to the food bank. Store director Bob MyKleby said 10 percent of sales in two hours equated to around two full pickups of food.
“They were surprised, they did not expect to get that much food,” MyKleby said of the food bank’s reaction to the donation.
The Payson and Hellsgate Fire Departments teamed up with Bashas’ to promote the event and help bag groceries. Of the turnout, Fire Chief Marty deMasi said, “It was amazing. We passed out cookies, greeted customers, bagged and carried out for customers.”
MyKleby said the store, at 142 E. Highway 260, plans to hold a similar event in the future.
