Privileged to witness historic week

What an historic week this has been for the sports world and Arizona, and for our country with the inauguration of our new president. I am so grateful that I could see history in the making.
Sunday was such an exciting day when the Arizona Cardinals won the NFC championship title to put them in the Super Bowl for the very first time!
Then on Tuesday, the inauguration of President Obama. People came from all over the U.S. to be a part of this great occasion. What a time in our history, I feel privileged to be able to witness this historic event. There seems to be a feeling of great hope for our nation for that “new beginning” that President Obama talks about. Let us all help to make that a reality.
Hellsgate Fire Department
I received a call from Hellsgate Fireflies auxiliary member Joan Phippany this week. Joan wants to thank the EMT team that responded to her 911 call at Diamond Point Summer Homes. Joan had fallen and needed assistance. Hellsgate responded in record time to help Joan be transported by ambulance to Payson Regional Medical Center. Joan says, ”You are all just great!” Joan is in room 509 and she would love to have visitors.
It was noted at the previous meeting of the Hellsgate fire board that there was no American flag available for the pledge of allegiance. As secretary to the Fireflies and a member of the auxiliary to the American Legion, I talked with the president of the auxiliary, Post #69, Cathy Alston, and she has donated an American flag for the meeting room at the Tonto Village fire station #22 on behalf of the post. Thank you to all the members of American Legion Post #69 for the generous donation.
Bright ‘star?’
Did anyone notice the very bright star in the southwestern sky this past week? The sight was so striking, I wondered what exactly what it was. I had the phone number for the National Weather Service in Flagstaff and decided to call to see if anyone there knew what this very bright light was. Well, it turned out to be the planet Jupiter. Jupiter must have been pretty darn close to earth to see this planet so clearly and so brightly.
Tonto Village Chapel
The chapel had a very successful Christmas party Dec. 20 with about 30-plus people in attendance.
The congregation feasted on great-tasting Mexican food and everyone joined in Christmas carols, led by music director Pat Watson and Pastor James Barker.
Some of the younger people decided to have a sleep over in front of the fireplace and had a wonderful time.
Birthdays
Grace Daniels of Tonto Village III will add another candle on her birthday cake Jan. 28. Candy Hart of Christopher Creek celebrated her birthday Jan. 21. Candy has spent many Tuesdays in the village playing nine-ball with the gals from the village. A very special birthday greeting to both of you.
Pool results
Last Tuesday evening the gals in the nine-ball team played at the Double D. The winners were Payge Ferriera, Patty Boeschling and Judi Tolle. Congratulations to the winners.
No Sunday games were held because of the playoff game with the Arizona Cardinals.
